The University of Washington is moving forward with the next stage of its arts-focused capital program, with renovation work now prioritized for the university’s art and music facilities. The second phase of the $15 million arts capital campaign has specifically identified the art and music buildings as key targets for upgrades and strategic improvements.
As part of this phase, the university has outlined a comprehensive renovation effort within the School of Music on its Seattle campus. Branded as the UW Art and Music Renovation project, the initiative is centered on enhancing the student experience and expanding the reach and impact of the arts on campus. The project is focused on interior improvements rather than new ground-up construction.
The scope of work includes a full interior overhaul of a major performance venue within the School of Music. This venue is a key space for instruction and performance activity and is positioned as a central element of the renovation program. The improvements are intended to support contemporary teaching methods and modern performance requirements for students and faculty.
Mortenson has been selected to carry out the renovation work. The firm has been tasked with modernizing core building systems while allowing the building to remain in operation throughout the construction period. That approach is designed to limit disruption to academic and performance schedules, maintaining continuity for students, faculty, and campus programming while upgrades are underway.
The Brechemin Auditorium, a 220-seat performance hall located on the first floor of the music building, is the focal point of the project. The renovation of this auditorium is described as a major upgrade, targeting both the physical accessibility and technical performance of the space. The seating capacity is expected to remain at 220, while the surrounding infrastructure is significantly modernized.
Key elements of the Brechemin Auditorium work include substantial ADA accessibility enhancements, intended to improve access for users and audience members with disabilities. Alongside these changes, the project will introduce acoustic improvements designed to elevate sound quality within the hall, supporting both instructional use and public performances.
The renovation will also incorporate updated mechanical, electrical, lighting, and audiovisual systems. These building systems upgrades are aimed at aligning the auditorium with contemporary standards for performance venues and academic environments, providing a more flexible and technically capable setting for future use.
Construction on the project is scheduled to begin in July 2026. The renovation program is planned on a defined timeline, with work expected to conclude in March 2027. Once completed, the upgraded Brechemin Auditorium and related interior improvements are intended to strengthen the University of Washington’s arts infrastructure and support the long-term role of the School of Music within the campus.
