**SKS and UC Berkeley Expand R&D Project to 2.3M Square Feet, Renaming it Berkeley Air & Space Center**
SKS Partners and the University of California, Berkeley announced an expansion of their joint venture R&D project at NASA Research Park. Originally planned at 1.4 million square feet, the project will now grow to a sizable 2.3 million square feet to meet increased demand, particularly from the aviation sector. With this evolution, the development has also been rebranded as the Berkeley Air & Space Center.
According to the joint venture’s statement, “With best-in-class facilities, including robust lifestyle and commercial amenities, Berkeley Air & Space Center will attract leaders across the private sector and academia.” The vision is to bring together global innovators from a wide range of disciplines, including aeronautics, aerospace, quantum computing, biology, social sciences, and deep tech.
Tim Smith, chief development officer at SKS, shared with the San Francisco Business Times that while space-related enterprises remain a key interest, current demand is being primarily driven by aviation-related tenants. Formal leasing efforts will be launching soon in partnership with CBRE.
