Skanska Completes State Route 71/91 Interchange Improvement Project

Global construction and development firm Skanska has announced the substantial completion of the State Route 71/91 Interchange Improvement Project in Southern California. The $137-million contract was awarded to Skanska by the Riverside County Transportation Commission to help alleviate one of the region’s most notoriously congested corridors.

Construction began in March 2023 and focused on modernizing and realigning critical components of the interchange. Key improvements include a new direct connector ramp to enhance access between State Routes 71 and 91, realignment of the entrance ramp from Green River Road, conversion of the single-lane connector between eastbound SR-91 and northbound SR-71 into a two-lane ramp, and the addition of an auxiliary lane along eastbound SR-91. The project also involved the installation of large cast-in-drilled hole concrete piles—some up to 120 feet in length and 13 feet in diameter.

“The completion of this project delivers a new direct connector from eastbound SR-91 to SR-71, significantly improving traffic flow at one of the region’s busiest highway interchanges,” said James Bailey, Executive Vice President of Skanska USA Civil’s West Coast operations. “The success of the project was driven by our commitment to safety while working in challenging conditions adjacent to active freeways.”

The improvement project represents a critical investment in Southern California’s transportation infrastructure, aimed at reducing travel times and increasing roadway safety for commuters.
