**Rice University Launches $120 Million Gateway Project and Stadium Renovation**

Rice University has announced the ambitious Gateway Project, a $120 million development initiative on university-owned land in Rice Village. The project aims to establish a new corridor that connects the main campus directly to the heart of the Village and reimagines the west side of campus. A significant component of the initiative is the extensive renovation of Rice Stadium.

The stadium overhaul will be led by global design firm Populous, in collaboration with development partner Nations Group.

As part of the renovation, Rice Stadium’s seating capacity will be reduced from approximately 47,000 to just over 30,000. The downsizing reflects a growing trend in college athletics to create more right-sized venues that enhance the fan experience and increase premium seating opportunities.

Key updates to the stadium include:

– The complete transformation of the west side, including the demolition of the existing press box, upper bowl, and upper concourse. In their place, a new three-level west concourse building will be constructed, featuring enhanced premium seating options.

– On the east side, about two-thirds of the upper deck will be removed. This change is intended to improve sightlines and foster a more intimate and engaging game-day environment.

– A new 360-degree concourse will be introduced, allowing fans to circulate freely throughout the stadium.

The Gateway Project underscores Rice University’s commitment to modernizing campus facilities and enhancing connectivity with the surrounding community.
