The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services has approved two significant hospital projects serving the Asheville area, authorizing both a major expansion at Mission Hospital and a new facility for Novant Health. The approvals advance more than $500 million in planned healthcare investment in the region, based on project cost estimates disclosed by the systems.
Mission Hospital in Asheville received approval to add up to 95 acute care beds. Once completed, the expansion is expected to increase the hospital’s total capacity to 828 beds. The proposed project carries a price tag of more than $198 million and is scheduled to be delivered in 2031, extending Mission’s role as a key regional medical center.
Separately, the agency authorized Novant Health to move forward with a new 34-bed hospital in Arden, located just south of Asheville. The planned facility, to be known as Novant Health Asheville Medical Center, is estimated to cost $322 million. Current plans call for completion in 2030, positioning the project as a new entrant in the local inpatient care landscape.
The Novant Health Asheville Medical Center is slated for a 24-acre site near the Biltmore Park Town Square shopping mall, off Interstate 26 at 455 Long Shoals Road. The location places the hospital in proximity to an established retail node and major highway access, potentially enhancing regional reach and patient draw once the facility opens.
These projects follow additional recent expansion moves by Novant Health elsewhere in the state. Earlier in the month, the system received approval to develop a $250 million hospital in Brunswick County. Novant is also advancing plans for a $1 billion expansion in Wilmington, underscoring sustained capital deployment into its North Carolina footprint.
Taken together, the newly approved projects in the Asheville area and the parallel initiatives in Brunswick County and Wilmington reflect a substantial pipeline of healthcare construction activity. While specific financing structures and delivery phasing were not detailed, the scale and timing of the announced investments indicate a long-term commitment to growing inpatient capacity and modernizing facilities across multiple markets in the state.
