McKinney Breaks Ground on Commercial Passenger Terminal

Contractors have officially broken ground on McKinney National Airport’s new commercial passenger service terminal. The 46,600-square-foot facility is slated to open in 2026 and represents a major step forward for the city, although a commercial airline carrier has yet to be secured.

According to Community Impact, the terminal is designed with four gates, with future plans allowing for an expansion to six. Initially, the facility is projected to serve approximately 200,000 passengers annually. With the expanded gate capacity, annual traffic could surpass one million travelers.

The McKinney City Council approved construction costs totaling approximately $61.36 million in May. Funding for the project comes from multiple sources, including sales tax revenue bonds issued by the McKinney Economic Development Corporation and proceeds from the city’s Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone No. 2.

Additionally, the city secured a $14.8 million grant from the Texas Department of Transportation to support infrastructure projects tied to the launch of commercial passenger services. The total cost of the terminal and related support facilities is estimated at $79 million.
