Steinberg Hart and Lowe Complete San Diego County Public Health Laboratory

Architecture firm Steinberg Hart and developer Lowe have announced the completion of the San Diego County Health and Human Services Public Health Laboratory. Situated within the 47-acre County Operations Center in Kearny Mesa, the new facility significantly upgrades the region’s public health infrastructure by tripling the size of the previous lab. The expanded space now accommodates around 100 employees and contractors.

The state-of-the-art laboratory is designed to conduct approximately 50,000 tests annually. These include diagnostics for infectious diseases, as well as safety testing for food and water. The facility also handles tests for animal rabies and hazardous pathogens, such as anthrax. Additionally, it serves as the designated Laboratory Response Network Lab for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for both San Diego and Imperial Counties.

“This new building continues the commitment to excellence established by the County of San Diego at the award-winning County Operations Center,” said Todd Majcher, Senior Vice President at Lowe. “As the lead developer for the campus, Lowe has had the privilege of working with this esteemed group for nearly 20 years to create a consolidated campus to serve the County and its residents.”

The new laboratory represents a significant milestone in public health capabilities for the San Diego region, supporting rapid diagnostics and responses to a broad range of health threats.
