Zoox Inc., a self-driving vehicle company owned by Amazon, is expanding into Hayward. The San Francisco Business Times reports that the Foster City-based company, acquired by Amazon for $1.3 billion in 2020, has leased over 219,000 square feet at 25810 Clawiter Rd. within the Hayward Exchange @92 industrial campus developed by Hines.

According to a source familiar with Zoox’s plans (not authorized to speak publicly), the startup will use this space as a large-scale manufacturing facility for its autonomous vehicles.

This move could greatly benefit Hayward as it actively seeks companies in what it calls “advanced industries.” Paul Nguyen, chief economic development officer of Hayward, stated last year that attracting such businesses is a top priority for the city. Among other tenants at Hayward Exchange is Amazon Web Services which pre-leased 275,000 square feet for their data center set to open in 2022.
