Governor Kathy Hochul has launched the Pro-Housing Communities Program, a statewide initiative that provides up to $650 million in state discretionary funds for localities committed to housing growth. This set of executive actions seeks to address New York’s housing crisis by incentivizing local governments to contribute towards increasing housing supply.

To qualify for Pro-Housing Community designation, municipalities must provide zoning and housing permit data demonstrating their commitment towards growing the available stock of homes. Those showcasing successful growth will receive preference when applying for specific discretionary funds such as the Downtown Revitalization Initiative grant program. The program aims at encouraging development while rewarding communities actively participating in providing solutions regarding this issue.
