**Google Commits $25 Billion to Data Center and AI Infrastructure Across PJM Grid**
Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has announced plans to invest $25 billion over the next two years to expand its data center and artificial intelligence infrastructure across the PJM Interconnection, the largest electric grid in the United States. The move underscores the growing energy demands of AI and cloud computing technologies.
In addition to its broader expansion, Google will allocate $3 billion to modernize two hydroelectric plants in Pennsylvania. This initiative is part of a larger framework agreement with Brookfield Asset Management to purchase 3,000 megawatts of hydroelectric power nationwide. The upgrades are aimed at supporting increasing energy needs associated with data center growth in the region.
The PJM Interconnection spans 13 states across the Mid-Atlantic, Midwest, and parts of the South, and includes the world’s largest data center hub in Northern Virginia. However, the region has been facing challenges in meeting rising power demands tied to rapid expansion in the data center and industrial sectors.
This announcement follows Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s recent statement that his company will also invest hundreds of billions into AI data center development.
