**Read King to Redevelop Former Macy’s Store at Almeda Mall into Indoor Marketplace**
Read King is planning a major redevelopment project at Almeda Mall in Houston, transforming part of the former Macy’s store location into an indoor marketplace. The new concept, named “The Market at Almeda Mall,” will feature a grocery store, restaurants, a fitness center, and other retail tenants.
The project involves repurposing the 290,000-square-foot building that once housed Macy’s, which closed earlier this year as part of the retailer’s nationwide shutdown of 66 locations. Read King acquired the 23-acre property last year, which includes the building structure, adjacent parking, and undeveloped land located across the street.
Currently, the company is in negotiations with several prospective tenants, including a grocery store, a fitness center, and a beauty school. The grocery store is expected to occupy approximately 65,000 square feet on the ground level. An additional 44,000 square feet on the second floor will be leased to various tenants, while the remaining upper-level area will be designated for utilities and operations.
The rest of Almeda Mall still houses several established retailers such as Foot Locker, Men’s Factory, and Bath & Body Works, along with a food court, making the upcoming marketplace a complementary addition to the existing shopping center.
This redevelopment is poised to bring renewed vitality to the area, offering a modern community-centric retail experience in southeast Houston.
