Opportunistic Phoenix investors have been moving quickly to construct factories, apartments and retail in anticipation of the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC) $40 billion high-tech plant opening in 2024. The facility was expected to hire 12,000 workers; however, TSMC is now pushing back the production start date by a year due to a shortage of skilled labor.
The Phoenix Business Journal reports that while TSMC anticipated beginning its N4 semiconductor processing at its Arizona fab by 2024, it lacks the personnel needed for equipment installation at the site which is currently under construction in north Phoenix. To address this issue and accelerate project completion, a TSMC spokesman says they are sending experienced technicians from Taiwan for training local skilled workers as well as bringing temporary workers from Taiwan into Arizona who possess unique expertise required for their highly-sophisticated facility systems and some construction activities.
