**Austin Theatre Alliance Launches $65M Campaign to Redevelop Iconic Downtown Theatres**
The Austin Theatre Alliance has announced a $65 million campaign aimed at restoring the 110-year-old Paramount Theatre and fully reimagining the 90-year-old State Theatre — two beloved cultural landmarks in downtown Austin.
In a significant step forward, the organization has revealed detailed plans to modernize these historic venues to better serve current and future audiences.
The Paramount Theatre will close in June to undergo its first complete restoration in over five decades. The eight- to nine-month renovation will include updated infrastructure, brand-new seating, expanded restrooms and concession areas, as well as enhanced lighting and sound systems. A major highlight of the project will be the long-envisioned addition of an upstairs lounge. Originally included in the theatre’s 1915 blueprints as a third-floor ballroom but never built, this space will finally take shape as JP’s Peace, Love, and Happiness Lounge.
Following the Paramount’s renovation, the State Theatre will begin a 13- to 16-month transformation. Its overhaul will feature a stylish art-deco-inspired interior, flexible seating to accommodate up to 500 guests, a basement speakeasy, rooftop deck, and improved accessibility and concessions. Construction at the State will commence once work on the Paramount is completed, with an official start date yet to be announced.
These updates mark a pivotal moment in preserving and revitalizing two of Austin’s most treasured theatrical landmarks while reimagining them for future generations.
