**Atlanta Considers Expanded Ban on Self-Storage Facilities Near BeltLine**
The Atlanta City Council is evaluating a proposal to ban the development of new self-storage facilities within the Beltline Overlay District. This area includes all properties located within a half-mile of the Atlanta BeltLine, a transformative urban redevelopment project.
According to the Atlanta Business Chronicle, the proposed measure aims to support the city’s broader vision of promoting walkable, vibrant neighborhoods. City officials and supporters of the legislation argue that adding more storage facilities could detract from efforts to cultivate an active, pedestrian-friendly environment.
This new ordinance would expand a previous measure passed three years ago, which prohibited self-storage facilities within 500 feet of the BeltLine. If approved, the updated legislation would significantly increase the restricted area.
Over the years, Atlanta has implemented several measures to guide development around the BeltLine. Restrictions have previously been placed on the construction of gas stations, drive-thru establishments, and data centers around the corridor.
The Atlanta BeltLine is a 33-mile loop of multi-use trails, parks, and anticipated future transit options. It connects 45 in-town neighborhoods and sits atop former railroad corridors, playing a central role in Atlanta’s urban revitalization and transportation planning.
