St. David’s South Austin Medical Center is preparing a significant expansion program, with a planned investment of $180 million to increase capacity and clinical capabilities at the hospital. The project centers on a new four-story patient tower that is intended to support the growing healthcare needs of the South Austin community.
Site and infrastructure work to support the future tower is scheduled to begin on March 2. This early phase will focus on the utilities and core systems needed to accommodate the additional structure. Construction of the tower itself is expected to commence later in the year, building on the foundational work completed in the initial stage.
The planned tower program is designed to add both general patient care and specialized treatment capacity. It will house a 30-bed patient care unit, expanding the hospital’s ability to serve inpatients. In addition, the tower will include a 20-bed inpatient rehabilitation unit, supporting patients who require focused rehabilitative services within an acute care setting.
Surgical capabilities at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center will also be expanded as part of the project. The new tower will introduce enhanced surgical services with four new operating rooms, along with shell space reserved for additional operating rooms that could be built out in the future. A seven-bay post-anesthesia care unit is planned to support recovery immediately after surgery, and an eight-bed pre/post-surgical unit will provide space for patients preparing for or recovering from procedures.
Public-facing areas of the hospital are included in the scope of the expansion. Plans call for a new lobby and waiting area within the tower, as well as an expanded main lobby and registration areas. A dedicated pre-admit testing suite will be added to streamline the intake process for patients scheduled for procedures, contributing to more efficient patient flow.
On the back-of-house side, the project includes key infrastructure upgrades intended to support both current and future operations. A new utility powerhouse will provide electrical and mechanical support for the expanded campus. The tower will also incorporate a sterile processing department, which is critical to supporting surgical volume, and additional shell space that can be built out for future development as needs evolve.
Throughout the construction period, hospital operations are expected to continue without interruption to primary access points. Both the hospital’s main entrance and the emergency department entrance will remain open to serve patients and visitors, with the expansion planned around maintaining these critical access routes.
