**Black Friday Shopping Shows Strong Performance Despite Inflation**

Despite ongoing inflation and the pressure of higher prices, U.S. consumers showed surprising resilience this Black Friday, with many retail sectors experiencing a noticeable uptick in foot traffic compared to the previous year. According to data from Placer.ai, year-over-year foot traffic was up across a number of major retailers, signaling a robust shopping season despite economic headwinds.

**Black Friday Retail Winners**

Placer.ai identified several key brands that emerged as standouts during the shopping holiday — a day traditionally seen as a barometer for consumer sentiment. Retailers that saw the highest year-over-year foot traffic increases include:

– Sam’s Club: +9.7%
– Nordstrom: +2.4%
– The Gap: +12.5%
– Lowe’s: +9.7%
– Barnes & Noble: +5.8%
– Bath & Body Works: +23.7%

Elizabeth Lafontaine, Director of Research at Placer.ai, wasn’t surprised by the lift in traffic. “The stronger performance of traffic to retailers in October signaled that consumers were more resilient than anticipated, and the trend continued with visits on Black Friday across many retailers,” she said.

Lafontaine added that this year, consumers were more promotionally-driven, making Black Friday feel like a return to form.

**Unexpected Success Stories**

While brands like Sam’s Club and Lowe’s benefitted from their value-driven offerings, it was perhaps more surprising to see traditional apparel and specialty retailers such as Nordstrom and The Gap among the foot traffic leaders.

According to Lafontaine, these brands’ commitment to authenticity and customer loyalty played a key role in their success. Nordstrom’s strong reputation for customer service and category expertise, along with The Gap’s focus on affordable fashion, helped keep them top-of-mind for holiday shoppers.

Barnes & Noble’s resurgence also caught attention. The legacy bookseller is benefiting from a renewed interest in in-store shopping experiences, offering consumers more than just merchandise — a trend that could signal a broader shift in retail strategy.

“These retailers stand out to shoppers among the countless choices, keeping them top-of-mind during major shopping seasons,” Lafontaine noted.

**Mall Rebound Continues**

Once written off by many as relics of a past retail era, malls also experienced a resurgence this Black Friday. According to Placer.ai’s Mall Index, foot traffic in malls — especially indoor centers — increased year-over-year.

Lafontaine highlighted the evolving role of malls as “third spaces,” offering a blend of shopping, entertainment, and dining. This enhanced sense of experience is particularly appealing to younger consumers. “Malls have become more relevant,” she said. “For shoppers looking to browse specialty retailers, malls still offer a good cross-section of stores and categories.”

**Shifting Consumer Behavior**

While general economic sentiment remains cautious, shoppers are still engaging with retail — albeit in more intentional ways. Many consumers have become more price-sensitive, prompting them to participate in highly promotional events like Black Friday to maximize their purchases.

Lafontaine explained that though consumers might be buying fewer items, actual visits to retail locations have not declined. “It has shifted their behavior toward spending during larger events,” she said.

However, she added an important caveat: “Higher income households haven’t altered their retail habits, but as lower and middle-income shoppers become more constrained, they may look for more deals or pull back on shopping to conserve income.”

This growing economic divide is likely to shape the rest of the holiday shopping season. Retailers may still benefit, Lafontaine said, as many consumers are expected to delay their purchases until closer to Christmas.

In sum, while inflation continues to pose challenges, Black Friday performance suggests shoppers remain ready to spend — especially when the right deals and experiences are on offer.
