**Target to Open at Former Sears Site in Houston’s Garden Oaks**
A new 129,490-square-foot Target store is set to rise at 4000 N. Shepherd Drive in the Garden Oaks neighborhood of Houston. The $19.1 million project is scheduled to break ground in April 2026 and is expected to be completed by March 2027.
The new store will be built on the site of a former Sears, which originally opened in 1949 and operated for more than 70 years before closing in 2020. The building was subsequently demolished following Sears’ wave of closures, which also affected stores at Willowbrook Mall in northwest Houston and Deerbrook Mall in Humble.
RSP Architects has been selected to design the upcoming Target location. According to the Houston Business Journal, Target acquired the 11.7-acre property from Lamasar Capital. Lamasar had previously purchased the site with financial backing from Summit Capital and Delta LP.
This latest development marks another chapter in the transformation of longstanding retail sites in Houston’s urban landscape.
