The South Bronx has demonstrated resilience in the face of COVID-19 challenges, with faster job and business growth compared to the borough and city. According to a report released today by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, community investments have aided in this recovery, supported by federal assistance which has played a significant role in creating jobs within the borough.

Elected officials are emphasizing the need for economic stimulation, improved housing conditions, reduced crime rates, and better healthcare services. The Hunts Point Produce Market has also contributed to sustaining operations during the pandemic while providing employment opportunities for Bronx residents.

Although there have been improvements in income levels and poverty rates have decreased slightly since last year’s report was released; disparities still exist. This highlights lower income levels as well as higher poverty rates among adults who lack college education when compared to borough averages. The pandemic has further highlighted existing health and socioeconomic gaps.

Comptroller DiNapoli urges sustained efforts towards economic growth through continued investments that will aid recovery efforts within South Bronx communities. Without ongoing support from development initiatives aimed at promoting economic growth within these areas; progress may be stalled or even reversed.
